Technical Theatre School

In June 2016 the Theatre Union of Russia and the Theatre Center “Na Strastnom” of the Theatre Union of Russia, under the patronage of the President of the Russian Federation, held the First National Project Technical Theatre School which had the aim to improve the skills of technicians from theatres all over Russia.

It is difficult to overestimate the importance of the First Technical Theatre School. Today, over 70 famous Russian theatre professionals have agreed that it is important to continue and to develop the project, sustaining its practical use and the richness of the course, especially for regional theatres.
That’s why in December 2016 we hold a shorter edition of the Technical Theatre School subtitled the Real Workshop.

During a week, the 10 selected students (2 from Moscow, 8 from regions) will attend hands-on workshops given by most important technical theatre professionals, Reinhard Bichsel and A.J. Weissbard, Robert Wilson’s technical director and lighting designer, respectively. Moreover, the project includes workshops by 14 leading Russian professionals in lighting, sound, set and multimedia art and technology.

A.J. Weissbard

An American lighting designer and artist who has worked worldwide designing for theater, video, exhibition, permanent architectural installation, special events and fashion. His collaborations include projects with Robert Wilson, Peter Stein, Luca Ronconi, Daniele Abbado, Marina Abramovic, Bernard Sobel, Peter Greenaway, William Kentridge, David Cronenberg, Andriy Zholdak, Shirin Neshat, Gae Aulenti, Fabio Novembre, Pierluigi Cerri, Richard Gluckman, Matteo Thun, Giorgio Armani, Hugo Boss, and the Martha Graham Dance Company.
His work has been seen in major opera houses, festivals, theaters, and other sites in more than 40 countries including Lincoln Center New York, Los Angeles Opera, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Teatro alla Scala Milan, Paris Opera Garnier, Brussels Opera La Monnaie, Teatro Real Madrid, Epidaurous ancient theater, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Esplanade Singapore, Bunka Kaikan Tokyo, Teatro Municipal São Paolo, Royal Opera House Muscat; Guggenheim New York/Bilbao, Royal Academy of London, Petit Palais Paris, Vitra Design Museum, Milan Triennale, Quirinale of Rome, Kunstindustrimuseum Copenhagen, Shanghai Art Museum; Aichi World Expo 2005, Milan Salone del Mobile, Venice Biennale, and the Louvre.
He was recently awarded the 2014 Golden Mask for best lighting design for musical theater and the the first IFSArts award for Lighting Design. He is based in Italy and teaches design in universities around the world.

Reinhard Bichsel

Robert Wilson’s technical director since 1985, in particular for the production and touring of The Civil WarS, The Forest by Robert Wilson and David Byrne, Shakespeare’s Sonnets, Krapp’s Last Tape (a solo with and by Robert Wilson), The Old Woman (with Mikhail Baryshnikov and Willem Dafoe), Letter to a Man (a solo with Mikhail Baryshnikov).
From 2003 to 2005 – technical director for Peter Brook’s Happy Days;
From 2008 to 2011 – technical director for Peter Brook, international tour of Warum Warum.
